Markets Expert: A Boiler-Room “Managed Account” and a Hard 33% Recovery

Recovery File · LCR-2026-004

Markets Expert ran a textbook boiler-room: relentless phone “advisers,” a managed account, and ever-rising paper profits. A retired Munich engineer trusted them for months. This case shows both what is recoverable and the cost of waiting.

How it started

H.B., 61, took a cold call from a confident “senior portfolio manager.” After a tiny test trade went well, he allowed Markets Expert to “manage” a larger sum across forex and crypto CFDs, funded by bank wires and card.

Where it went wrong

The advisers discouraged withdrawals, urging him to “let positions mature.” When he insisted, they cited “margin requirements” and a “tax clearance fee.” Five months had passed before he accepted it was a scam and contacted us — by then funds had been layered through multiple jurisdictions.

“They called me by my first name every day. I thought they were my advisers, not the scam.”

The recovery, step by step

  1. We triaged an aged case honestlyWe told him upfront that a five-month delay limits what is reachable — and focused on the segments still traceable.
  2. We reconstructed the payment trailWe separated wires from card payments and identified which transfers had the strongest claim routes.
  3. We pursued the bank and card channelsWe lodged an APP-style fraud claim with his bank and chargeback claims on the card-funded “fees.”
  4. We traced the freshest crypto hopsOnly the most recent crypto transfer was still sitting at an identifiable exchange; we flagged it for freeze.
  5. We consolidated a partial returnCard claims plus a small exchange hold returned €24,600 — partial, but real.
33%Outcome: €24,600 of €74,500 returned. The lesson is timing: the longer a boiler-room runs, the more of the money is layered beyond reach. Earlier contact would likely have recovered more.

Warning signs we flagged

  • Cold calls from “portfolio managers” you never approached.
  • Advisers who actively discourage you from withdrawing.
  • New fees (“margin,” “tax clearance”) appearing whenever you ask for money back.
  • A first-name-friendly rapport used to keep you depositing.
