How a Phishing Link Drained $18K in Seconds —And How We Recovered It

You don’t need to fall for a fake investment scheme or a long con to lose your crypto. Sometimes, one click is all it takes.

That’s what happened to our client — a savvy crypto user who had never been scammed before. He received a DM claiming to be from a support rep for a DeFi project he used.

The message looked legitimate. The profile was convincing. The link? Not so much.

What Happened

The link led to a page that mimicked the real site perfectly. Same branding. Same wallet connect flow.

But behind the scenes, it granted unlimited token approval to a scammer-controlled wallet.

Seconds after connecting, $18,000 in ETH and tokens were drained.

The Immediate Response

Thankfully, the client contacted us the same day. We immediately analyzed the transaction and traced the outgoing funds. The ETH was routed through several wallets, but hadn’t yet been fully laundered.

One of the wallets interacted with a centralized exchange just hours after the theft.

Recovery Tactics

We moved fast:

  • Collected all relevant transaction hashes
  • Documented the phishing site (screenshots + domain records)
  • Verified the scammer’s wallet trail
  • Submitted a formal fraud report to the exchange with our findings

The key was speed. Exchanges often can’t intervene once funds are withdrawn or mixed. But we caught this one early.

The Result

Just four days after the theft, the exchange froze the destination wallet.
After processing our documentation and client verification, they returned the frozen balance:
$14,200 was recovered.

How to Protect Yourself

  • Never click links from random DMs — even if the profile looks “official.”
  • Always verify URLs independently before connecting your wallet.
  • Revoke token approvals you don’t need using tools like Etherscan or Revoke.cash.
  • Act fast if something goes wrong — speed makes recovery possible.
